One sixth of the human population currently suffers from parasitic disease leading to an estimated 96 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and 1 million deaths per year. Outside malaria, the World Health Organization (WHO) considers all human parasitic diseases as neglected. Parasitic disease disproportionately impacts human health in developing nations, which are endemic to many of the world’s most virulent parasitic pathogens. Our lab’s research in vaccine development for parasitic disease is urgently needed as there is no vaccine that entirely protects against infection. A vaccine capable of preventing parasitic disease will have a major impact on human health worldwide.
