Maria-Elena Young studies health inequities based on citizenship/legal status and how health inequities are driven by variation in state and local policies. Her most recent work shows that states across the US have distinct policy contexts made up of policies that extend rights and protections to those without citizenship, but that also expose them to immigration surveillance and policing. Further, states with more rights and protection policies for noncitizens appear to have reduced inequities by citizenship in health insurance, access to care, and poverty.
